Laying roof roofing roof: important rules and step -by -step process

Here at "All about the Roof," we aim to solve roofing’s enigmas and make it understandable to all. It is important to comprehend the fundamental guidelines and the detailed procedure of installing roof roofing, regardless of whether you are an experienced do-it-yourselfer or a homeowner starting a first-time roof project.

Roofing serves as more than just a roof over your house; it also provides durability, protection, and aesthetic appeal. If you do it correctly, you can improve the curb appeal of your home while keeping it safe from the elements. It’s crucial to familiarize yourself with the fundamental guidelines that ensure a successful roof installation before beginning the project.

First and foremost, being prepared is essential. The first steps are evaluating the state of your existing roof, learning the local building codes, and selecting the appropriate materials. To guarantee longevity and performance, each type of roof—shingle, tile, or metal—has specific installation requirements that must be carefully followed.

Appropriate planning and measuring are the first steps in the methodical process of installing roof roofing. The first steps that create the foundation for a successful installation are cleaning the roof surface of debris, making sure there is enough ventilation, and installing underlayment. Every layer on your roof, from the ridge cap to the starter strips, is vital to its overall structural integrity.

Paying close attention to details is crucial during the installation process. Important actions that increase the roof’s resilience to weather include correctly aligning shingles or tiles, using the appropriate fasteners, and applying sealants as needed. Making the effort to complete each step accurately guarantees fewer problems in the future.

We at "All about the Roof" are dedicated to helping you at each step of the roofing process. Whether you’re searching for professional guidance, product suggestions, or troubleshooting assistance, our mission is to enable you to have a roof that improves the aesthetics and marketability of your house in addition to providing protection.

Installation of roof roof roof

You must write your own instructions if this is your first experience working with a roll roof. Pay close attention to how the roofing should be laid on the old roof model, paying particular attention to the location of his folds and the precise way the roof’s corners were cut. Draw something simple on the paper that you will be working with. And go ahead and begin!

Roof preparation for roll insulation

Let"s start with the most important thing: a high -quality flat roof from roofing material should consist of at least two or three layers in order to serve long enough and not demand frequent repairs. Before you cover the roof by roofing roofing, or its more improved analogue, carefully evaluate its condition. T AK, if there is already an old roof on a concrete roof, and it has lost its properties (since you started the installation of a new one), do not put a new one on top of it. The fact is that it will no longer improve waterproofing, but it will lie unevenly and create new problems. In addition, if you mount roofing roofing ruboroid immediately on a concrete plate or stone, then remember that the surface layer of such canvases on a rigid basis tolerates the load from a person’s weight, without any ruptures. But if the new roofing material is glued directly to the old one, then this is fraught with a deterioration in the quality of the entire roof. Such a canvas is already easy to be pushed with boots or working tools.

For this reason, it’s crucial to thoroughly clean the roofing material’s old seams with a wide knife or chisel. The most important thing is to properly sharpen every tool. After that, make notches in the material with an ax, remove it with a knife, and use a chisel to work in tight spaces.

Once the old layers are removed, all of the damage to the previously invisible slabs will become visible. After mounting foam has solidified, trim the excess and close the holes. Create a cement-sand mixture in all areas, and use liquid glass to fill in small cracks as needed:

As you can see, the roof of a typical garage was covered by just one layer of roofing material in this example. Furthermore, this isn’t the most dependable choice. However, using two or even three layers is better when it comes to reliability. Let’s focus a little longer on a few of the steps that make up this process:

  • Step 1. First prepare the base well, clean it and delete all the remnants of the old roof.
  • Step 2. If you do not need to align the roof, apply the first layer of mastic. Do not overdo it! If the glue layer is too thick, which is inevitable when using severe viscous mass, then it will not at all lead to an increase in strength and waterproofing. Most often, such an adhesive base drys out and is covered with cracks, through which rainwater is easily penetrated.
  • Step 3. Lay the roofing material on it, from the bottom up, according to the instructions, depending on the type of roofs. The first layer of material lay with an overlap 15-20 cm parallel to the edge of the blood.
  • Step 4. Wrap the ends under the edge itself and fix it with a special rail or slate nails. Preferably in steps 50 cm.
  • Step 5. Next, apply mastic to this layer and lay the second, but at the same time already with overlap through the horse, if any. We act in the same way with the edges.
  • Step 6. And, finally, the last time the mastic is already applied to the finished surface, gluing the last layers of roofing material, with a shift half. In this way, you can easily avoid the coincidence of the seams with the lower rows, which means that the roof will be more protected from leaks.

By the way, a waterproofing film is frequently rolled into bitumen prior to laying the roll roof on the mastic underneath it. Practically speaking, it’s a good solution!

Fixation of paintings using cold gluing seams

Roofing materials with self-adhesive canvases that have previously had bitumen mastic applied to the back are also sold nowadays. They must use a gas burner or white spirit to heat the adhesive layer. Here, the bitumen is melted when the flame reaches it. The canvases are rolled using a roller after being applied to one another.

Use your hands to firmly press all of the joints and corners:

Laying roofing material with welds

Prior to beginning construction, the flat roof’s surface must be lined with cement and construction sand to cover any chips and cracks. Remove the concrete and apply a deep penetration primer to the edges if the plate there has already been damaged. Next, align the entire surface and install the plate using a cement-sand mixture. Using a chisel, all bulges must be removed, and a solution must be found for the recess. Now remove all dust and dirt from the plate and apply soil. If you can perform well under duress, that’s good. Apply orthophosphoric acid to all visible reinforcement.

Starting from the lower edge, the roofing material is laid, being sure to press it firmly into the concrete surface:

Make sure to roll the material evenly throughout the strip using a specific rink when you’re laying it down to mastic. If you eliminate the air bubbles beneath the panel, it will smoothly reach the base. Skilled artisans traverse this rink not once, but twice!

But make sure to clear the edges where the seam will pass of any crumbs by 15-20 cm before gluing together the roofing material’s luminaries with sprinkles. After that, we take two rinks and glue the desired portion to the seam:

The roofing material’s edges should be wrapped beneath the roof and fastened with slate nails at the same time.

Hot method: melting bitumen

The method used to adhere roofing material to the roof and walls can be either hot or cold, depending on its type. Mastic or glue is specifically heated in a different container until it melts for this purpose. In terms of technology, it is not all that dissimilar from the cold. However, it’s crucial to apply the heated mastic to the concrete as soon as possible and roll the roll out quickly, gently aligning as you go. After that, the second layer has begun to warm.

The sole point is that, because moisture evaporates quickly, a liquid mass will start to bumb up on the roof if there are any damp areas before bitumen is applied, like after rain. particularly if it was warm. By the way, workers shouldn’t do that. In this situation, you will have to exercise extreme caution.

For instance, this is one of the most widely used recipes for making bitumen mastic on your own: place 8 kg of bitumen in a metal container. Lightly stir the fire beneath the pot, melt the material, and let it warm up until foam forms. Now add 1.5 kg of filler, such as peat crumbs, chalk, or mineral wool, and thoroughly combine everything. Next, pour in half a liter of spent oil and stir once more. You can now use Mastic for work:

By the way, for more than one decade, the roof of garages has been made in this way: glue roofing on melted resin. The technology itself is quite simple: the larger the layers, the more reliable the roof. Although in the case with garages, only one layer often melts. The exception is only a roof with an angle of 45 degrees, but if you also walk on it, then you will definitely need two layers of material. One will be litter, and external – with a protective baby. If the roof has a slope of 15 degrees, then four layers are already needed, of which three will be lining and only one – finish. Each next layer is laid on each other by 10-15 cm. As soon as the first layer of roofing material is laid, the surface is once again treated with mastic and the second layer is already healed perpendicular to the previous.

Additionally, keep in mind that when working precisely on the garage roof, the joints between the roof and nearby garages require extra care. In these areas, old bitumen frequently separates and forms cracks. Don’t leave any materials in these areas!

Thankfully, though, it is no longer required to precisely melt the resin. Purchasing specialized construction mastic from the store is sufficient. However, exercise caution. The mastic will smell strongly of chemicals and have a high ignorance before it dries.

Cold method: ready -made compositions

The advantage of the cold method is that it saves dealing with hot, sticky material and eliminates the need to thaw the mastic beforehand. However, cold mastic will cost you extra because it can only be purchased as a finished product, even though cooking it hot on your own is not difficult.

In terms of heating temperature, the solution will become more plastic the higher it is. Nevertheless, the cold paste that was purchased is elastic at all temperatures. And when the entire process takes a long time, it is somewhat better if you only have to work on a portion of a complex shape or if you have to work alone. Ultimately, you will need to descend from the roof on a regular basis in order to relight the mastic, reheat it, and then haul it hot onto the roof. Idling, dreaming of all this?

Therefore, compared to the first example with illustrations, cold mastic is more economically spent because it is more expensive:

The roofing material is always adhered to vertical surfaces using the cold version. Ultimately, you won’t continue to hold the heated canvases in your hands until they have cooled and solidified.

In this instance, you will also require a primer—either store-bought or homemade—in the form of a gasoline or bitumen solution. After using this primer on the surfaces, the primary mastic is applied, and the canvases are laid. The most important thing is to avoid using motor oil or spent hydraulic fluids when cold laying. After the roofing material is adhered, you must wait for the solvent to fully evaporate and transform into a viscous material.

Such a roof’s edges are handled in three different ways:

  • Method number 1. Fixation with metal stripes. Convenient, quickly, but over time, corrosion may occur.
  • Method number 2. Fastening with wooden rails. It would seem that the tree material is more fragile than the metal, but it can be treated with anti -pires and antiseptics, which is more difficult to crank up with metal rails.
  • Method number 3. And finally, gluing the edges with bitumen.

Regardless of the approach you select, processing the edges is a must. If not, moisture will seep beneath the canvases and start to erode the roof from the inside out:

Frusting the roofing material using a gas burner

Typically, the traditional roofing material is applied over bitumen mastic or a customized glue that can be made or purchased separately. However, the modifications made to roofing material are more frequently heated to high temperatures and glued there:

Please be aware that the temperature of the gas burner is different when melting roofing material on a wooden and bitumen roof, particularly if it is just affecting the seams:

Here’s an illustration of a roof that was adhered to with glue:

But work with a concrete base. It is necessary to warm up such a roofing material using a gas burner, and it needs experience with it. But such a roof is allowed to lay in one layer. To do this, first heat the lower part of the material to boiling, while warming the entire surface of the roof. Further, using a metal hook, the roll is gradually deployed throughout the roof. It is important that there are no bubbles under the roofing material, and the material itself should lie down evenly, without folds. At the same time, each next row is laid on the previous one with an overlap about 15 cm:

By the way, the regulations require that a prefabricated border that protrudes slightly above the surface protect flat roofs. Its two inside sides ought to have a beveled angle to direct rainwater flow from the exposed side of the roof directly into the gutter. In this instance, the roof’s fourth side is typically already next to the house’s wall.

Make specific incisions on the ground beforehand before attaching the roofing material in the shape of paintings. It will then be easy for you to lift it and toss it through these boundaries:
