Flat roof without leaks: waterproofing of a concrete roof and wooden

Maintaining the integrity and lifespan of your house or building depends on keeping your flat roof leak-free. Effective waterproofing is crucial to shielding your roof from the elements and avoiding expensive damage, regardless of whether it is made of wood or concrete.

Because of their durability, concrete roofs are frequently used in both residential and commercial construction. Effective concrete roof waterproofing typically involves the use of multiple layers. In order to create a barrier against water infiltration, a combination of coatings, membranes, and sealants are usually applied. Concrete waterproofing technology

The method used to waterproof a flat roof is largely reliant on the insulation’s accessibility and the characteristics of the roof’s future operation. To put it plainly, a roofing cake for a basic, non-explosive roof and a roofing pie for landscaping are completely different.

Assume, for the sake of simplicity, that we must insulate a conventionally operated roof using concrete. In other words, a vapor barrier is already in place, insulation has been installed, a slope has been created, and a reinforced cement-sand screed has been flooded and dried.

In front of us is a smooth concrete surface that needs to have a hydraulic tank placed on it. How can I do it correctly? The material chosen has a direct bearing on roof waterproofing technology. or more accurately, from his kind.

Rolled swimming waterproofing

All melted bitumen materials in rolls fall under this category; they range from traditional banal roofing material to contemporary rolled waterproofing with a bitumen-polymer binding mass.

The most common method of waterproofing a concrete roof is this one. Essentially, for three factors:

  • low price even for materials of a conditional premium segment;
  • simple installation and honed technology;
  • It is easy to find a roofer with experience with such materials – melted bitumen waterproofing covered millions of square meters of roofs in the country.

Any swollen waterproofing has a bitumen-based composition and is covered on two sides. Typically, the front side of the roll waterproofing is coated with mineral crumbs to shield the bitumen binding from UV deterioration.

Ruberoid literally spreads for a few years because it is built on regular cardboard. The materials—fiberglass or fiberglass—are more costly. Additionally, the composition of bitumen can vary greatly. They might use modified bitumen instead of regular bitumen for its production, adding different additives to it. Consequently, the melted waterproofing has a service life of five to twenty-five to thirty years.

  4. Then the waterproofing begins to melt on the concrete roof: the roll is slowly rolled over with a metal capture, heating it with the below with a burner. There are special indicators on modern materials that show that the lower layer will heat up to the desired temperature.
  5. If necessary, the second. In this case, the side joint between the rolls of the first layer should coincide with the central axis of the rolls of the second layer.
  6. At the end, the junctions of the roof adjustments to the walls and parapet are made out. At the same time, in the places of installation of water intake funnels, waterproofing of roofing with liquid materials – Bitumen -based adhesions are possible.

Bulk and sprayed roofs are more dependable and long-lasting than rolled roofs when installed correctly.

First of all, the horizontal roof’s waterproofing is seamless. And the joints on flat roofs are where most leaks originate. In other words, there are no joints and no issues.

Bulk waterproofing is monolithic, to boot. As a result, it functions cohesively, but the roll roof’s basis and the astringent behave very differently at very high or, conversely, very low temperatures.

  • Bitumen mastic. The oldest, cheap and easy to use material. At the same time the most short -lived. The service life of the bitumen roof from 5 to 15 years, depending on the additives. It is quickly destroyed under the influence of ultraviolet rays, the slope to cracking under load in a cooled state and with sharp temperature differences.

  • Combined mastic based on bitumen. This category includes various modifications of bitumen mastics: bitumen-polymer, rubber-bitumen, bitumen-lakek. The roof from such mastics will last 20 years or more, it is unclean to cracking, better tolerates temperature changes, much stronger and more elastic.

  • Polyurethane mastic. This type of bulk roof is applied with a very thin layer-only 0.5-0.8 mm, depending on the type. At the same time, after drying, it turns out to be extremely strong, resistant to ultraviolet rays and a very durable coating with a service life of up to 40 years.

  • Polymochevin. An exceptionally durable sprayed waterproofing coating of a new generation roof, which can last more than 50 years and, moreover, hardens in less than an hour. It is so effective that with the help of polymochevina, waterproofing pools and ponds. But due to a very high cost for roofs, this material is used extremely rarely.

The method for approaching any bulk roof device is nearly the same, regardless of the material.

It’s cleaned and emptied before the waterproofing is applied. Using a sealant or solution, all cracks and potholes must be sealed at the same time. If not, the waterproofing coating in these areas will be more "weak" and prone to leaks.

The concrete base is then primed in one or two layers. Bitumen primer is used for bitumen-based mastic roofs. A unique primer for polyurethane bulk coatings. Although priming the basis is required in areas of adjacency, deformation seams, and near drain and parapet elements, it can be skipped on even surfaces, albeit at the expense of a shorter roof lifespan.

Layers of mastic are applied until the coating reaches the required thickness. Furthermore, each new layer must only be applied after the preceding one. One layer of polymochevin is typically sprayed.

A finish coating can be applied to a bulk or sprayed roof once the final layer has dried.

Effective waterproofing techniques are necessary to achieve a leak-free flat roof on both concrete and wooden roofs. Homeowners and contractors can select the best waterproofing techniques and materials by being aware of the special qualities and difficulties associated with each material. Seamless membranes or coatings that offer strong defense against water intrusion and structural damage are advantageous for concrete roofs. To guarantee longevity and stop water intrusion, sealants and coatings applied to wooden roofs need to be carefully monitored. Selecting the best waterproofing option for the particular type of roof will prolong its life and keep the interior dry and secure for many years to come.

Effective waterproofing is necessary to maintain a flat roof free of leaks, whether it is made of wood or concrete.
